Many factors can cause the "Server Not Found" error to appear when retrieving the weather or searching for cities. Below is a list of all known fixes. Please contact me at Mike@SingersCreations.com if you know of a fix that is not posted here.

1. Uninstall Weather Watcher using the "Uninstall Weather Watcher" link from the "Weather Watcher" folder in your Windows Start menu. Then, reinstall Weather Watcher from http://www.GetWeatherWatcher.com.

2. If you're using Windows Vista, try disabling UAC:
http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

3. If you're using a software firewall (e.g. Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security), then make sure your firewall is allowing Internet access to "C:\Program Files\Weather Watcher\DL.EXE". DL.EXE is used to download data from the Internet, so it must have Internet access. You can try shutting down your firewall to verify the blockage.

4. If you're using an authenticated proxy server, then make sure you complete the "Proxy" section of the Weather Watcher Options.

5. Make sure you are not running any other programs that might be blocking Internet access to "C:\Program Files\Weather Watcher\DL.EXE".

6. Make sure you can access http://www.weather.com in your web browser. It's possible that your computer is being blocked from viewing their website.

7. Try toggling your Internet Explorer Options. Open Internet Explorer, and go to "Tools" --> "Internet Options..." in the program menu. Click the "Advanced" tab and scroll down to the Security settings at the bottom. Check any option, click "Apply", uncheck the same option, and click "Apply" again.

8. Some people have found that some of the Internet Explorer Security Options are causing the problem. Unchecking the following Internet Explorer Options fixed the problem for various people:

• Do not save encrypted pages to disk
• Warn about invalid site certificates
• Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode
• Warn if forms submittal is being redirected

9. If you're using a proxy server, enable the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" Internet Explorer Option.

10. If you're using Windows XP, install Windows SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

11. If you're using Firefox, then try running through the following steps:

• Open Firefox and go to Tools --> Options... in the top menu.
• Click the Content tab in the Firefox Options window.
• Click the first Exceptions button, enter www.weather.com in the Address of web site text box, click the Allow button, and click the Close button.
• Do the same with the second Exceptions button.

I just started getting server not found. Disabling firewall and rebooting did not fix issue. Niether did anything in your post. Neither did rebooting. So the app is complete useless atm. :(

I also deleted the C:\Program Files\Weather Watcher folder but still no luck.

Cant do anything. Trying to add a city results in server not found error.

Firewall is completely disabled and not even reunning and this is after a reboot. All other appz are closed. Nothng is running on start. No services, no spyware, nothing.

Even checking for new version fails. In like 1/10 of a sec. And tried with firewall open to see what was going on and its not even trying to connect to the internet it seems. Nothing is being loged.

Also, I have now tried both 5.5c and 5.6 Beta 5. And get the same error in both, can not find server. And the update weather watcher failes for both too. This just started happening.

God Bless America

This works great
- Do not save encrypted pages to disk
- Warn about invalid site certificates
- Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode
- Warn if forms submittal is being redirected
Do that set then program would download again uncheck everthing that you see there and just used firefox or mozilla hehe :)

Yep unchecking those things in IE did it . You should make that a warning on program instalation because it seems it is kinda of default :) . I've got SP 2 and all the update and the IE settings were at deault ( I use Firefox anyway :) ) . Also an older version of Weather Watcher worked just fine before I updated .

I have tried all of these suggestions and still its a no go.
I did notice this. You say try the website directly, see if it works, but...
I checked the outgoing logs in my router, and everytime i hit refresh or update, it is trying to get to desktop3.weather.com, which does not exist.

Make sense?

Well I've gottent the "Server not found" error and downloaded the latest version and read through this forum and tried every "fix" listed here and I still get the dreaded "server not found" error message. Looks like I've taken a fairly usefull program and made it into a totally useless one. Well, it was fun while it lasted. Weatherbug, here I come (pop-ups and all).[V][V][V]

I think it is interesting that while browsing the internet with Firefox, Internet Explorer would "encounter a problem and must close", and would then close Firefox. This problem, in retrospect, started occurring about the time the "server not found" error started appearing with WeatherWatcher. You stated that WW uses IE to update, I wonder if WW was the problem the whole time[}:)] I have uninstalled WW. Time will tell if that was the original problem.

The important point is that Weather Watcher is using IE... and not the other way around. It sounds like you have a problem with IE.

Personally I would look into whether IE can access weather.com. I would then see if a firewall or av or antispyware or something is blocking ww.exe or dl.exe from accessing weather.com.

For a different app you might want to look at weather.com's own weather app.

IE accesses weather.com easily.

Then make sure that both ww.exe and dl.exe still exist in the Weather Watcher folder. If so make sure your user id has admin priviledges, I seem to recall a problem with users with limited access XP accounts. If so "then see if a firewall or av or antispyware or something is blocking ww.exe or dl.exe from accessing weather.com.".

BTW This debugging discussion should be done in the Support forum not the FAQ forum. Mike, can you split it off and move it?

EdP, thanks for the tip but, weather.com's weather program crashed during install. [:(!]I took that as a bad omen.

I think your problems extend beyond Weather Watcher. Make sure you have a recent back up of your important files.
