With respect to your opinion I agree with you 100% - however, those same files *can* be used by advertising companies and marketers to perform 'browsing habit research' by knowing where you have visited and in what order and how responsive you are not only to links and such, but *las* what types of ads (if any) garner your attention at all. Hence, the reason for a lot of paranoid people out there that are scared of advertising - they don't want the companies to be able to develop better and better advertising targeted toward them directly.

While, again, I agree with you in that advertising is something that I rarely pay attention to, a fact of the matter is that it can also be malicious, and the use of that cookie can just as easily be used to store information you don't *want* it to store - such as confidential and private information - and then be transmitted back to a home server to gain access to your financial accounts, etc.

Granted, *something* somewhere will be executing, but that little text file will be an integral part of the equation.

Speaking of cookies, I have a slightly different problem - every time I change the view type (daily, hourly, moon) I am asked to save a cookie on my machine - and regardless of if I check the box to always allow, I get asked again. Since it is 'local' I don't see why it should have a problem in the first place, but I can play around with it to find a solution for any user in the future that might run into this - I have a sneaking suspicion it is specifically related to Vista, IE 7 and my secure, locked down browser settings....

Well I certainly would rather avoid ads related to my interest rather than ads I have absolutely no interest in. The two biggest reasons I've encounter that concerns some people are cookies that they can reveal places visited that may be embarassing. xxx.com and etc. And malware apps that imply that they are more dangerous than they really are, Ad-Aware flagging the WW cookie for example.

hmmm I wonder why Ad-Aware doesn't flag it for me? I don't have it quarantined. Oh there it is, it's at the end of the ~~local~~ entry. One of my 8 cookies Ad-Aware classified as "Critical".

A simple solution to that problem, don't input confidential information to sites that don't use the https prrotocol or to sites you really don't know much about. And if you're not sure you can really trust a site, be creative with your answers. More than once I have entered:

aaaaaaa bbbbbb
123 cccccc ave
Nowhere, NY
123-456-7890

It's not IE 7. I have IE 7 on XP and I'm not seeing that problem. Granted it was an upgrade to my IE 6 settings rather than a clean install so that may be a variation unique to my system.

BTW I do all my banking online and have for years. I also spend 6 or more hrs a day online and have for years. I have found no reason to be overly concerned about cookies. I do nothing to block them and only periodically run Ad-Aware and SpyBot to clean them up.

As I said before, I agree with you - I was just playing Devil's Advocate.

I am in the same boat, doing things online with a 9600 baud modem first and foremost, up until now...

Oh, and as far as it not being IE - IE7 in Vista is significantly different animal than IE7 in XP. But I still haven't found the problem....

For those that use WW's Map History more than the Interface skin's Map button this change to the Eds Mini Tronnix skin allows the Maps button to be cleanly overlayed for a narrower WW forecast window and still show Partly Cloudy on a single line. :thumbright:

Instead of using rapidsh*t with all the hellish harassment of download limits (now only allowing ONE then making you wait a half hour before you can dl another), etc, WHY NOT TRY THE FREE HOSTS BELOW that have hassle-free uploading AND HASSLE FREE DOWNLOADING TOO?

http://mihd.net/

MediaFire Free File Hosting
http://support.mediafire.com/index.php? ... se&_a=view
Requires free acct registration for uploaders, no reg for downloading
Free downloads, disconnected dl support, no limits, no waiting or capcha b.s.

http://www.driveway.com/

http://ifile.it/wiki/faqs

http://www.snapdrive.net/

http://www.2shared.com/
popup ads when someone downloads but no waiting

below are sites offering free hosting and free no=waiting unlimited downloads but I haven't personally uploaded or downloaded from them.

http://www.ziddu.com/

http://www.youshare.com/

This site had good reviews at filehostingreview.com
http://www.bigupload.com/

Reohix Rack Free File Host
http://www.rack.reohix.com/

http://www.nakido.com/

File Hosting & Storage Site Reviews
http://www.filehostingreview.com/

This is a page on a forum of a running list of free hosts, and there is a really funny Anti-Rapidshare animated message on it...I am posting this because its funny and I agree with them that RAPIDSHARE SUCKS!
http://www.110mb.com/forum/biggest-list ... 8.120.html

Maybe if more people become aware that there are free file hosts available that don't harass uploaders OR downloaders with b.s. to try to bully people into buying premium services, AND if people use these free filehosts instead of rapidshi*t or other sites using harassment tactics of limits, waiting, capcha crap, etc, the sites that use harassment to try to sell premium service, will lose enough business to have to change their ways!

Thanks for the list. Personally I've had no problems with Rapidshare, uploading or downloading. And they keep my skins available long after I've uploaded them.

I did. I may be graphically challenged, but the current captcha, requiring you to recognize 4 of 5-6 CATS linked to letters, seems to be beyond my pattern recognition ability. The feature that kicks you back to the 60 sec. timeout each time you fail is positively charming.
